Why is it that despite several universities in Africa, no home grown industry to harness her rich natural resources?

Africa is blessed with the following minerals (diamonds, sugar, salt, gold, iron, cobalt, uranium, copper, bauxite, silver, petroleum and cocoa beans, woods and tropical fruits etc). Yet no indigenous industries to harness them. For instance, poor Africans toil for days trying to sift diamond buried underground. Europeans come in with modern technology to source and process the minerals.

Africa is rich in gas and petroleum resources yet she lacks the technology to drill and refine them.

The world is searching for alternative sources of energy. The current world sources of energy are electrical, wind, solar, etc.). Despite abundance of sunshine and wind, Nigeria relies more on personal generators than national electricity supply to meet energy needs.

In the field of agriculture, traditional farm techniques are still in use despite abundance of land whereas Switzerland with little land mass and only 4 months of clement weather, is a major exporter of milk and other diary products.

Africa is not wanting in the number of polytechnics and universities. So how comes that despite these higher education institutes, Africa has no home grown industry to harness these natural resources? How then can we help countries in Africa to be competitive in the committee of nations?
